No, You Don't Need to Be Tacky to Decorate for St. Patrick's Day

Julie Ann Rachelle Interiors LLC

I’ve never decorated for St. Patrick’s Day before because of all the tacky decorations lacking imagination that are offered. You know exactly what I mean, right?

However, sheltering in place has me nesting, and wanting to decorate more, and inspired by my mother who always decorated for the holidays, I started searching for ideas on Pinterest for classy ideas for decorating for this Irish holiday.

I’m also sharing with you a tutorial, and a few photos from my own home.

What I’m Loving Right Now

Easy St. Patrick’s Day Decor: 11 Ideas To Do Today showing a framed chalkboard with the saying “Irish Eyes are Smiling Sure they Steal Your Heart Away” on a table with spring floral arrangements, framed vintage music, and vintage book bundle, all on…

A little background about me: my mother’s great-grandfather immigrated from Ireland during the Potato Famine that left many Irish families starving.

Unfortunately for a genealogy buff like myself, in 1922 a fire during the Irish Civil War in the Public Records Office in Dublin destroyed many of the records one would use to trace one’s ancestry.

What was lost?

“Apart from a few fragments, the Irish Censuses of 1821, 1831, 1841, and 1851 were burned in the Public Records Office.

So, too, were just over half of all the Anglican Church of Ireland registers deposited there following the dis-establishment of the state church in 1869.

In addition, the majority of wills and testamentary records that had been proved in Ireland were reduced to ashes (although transcripts of many testamentary records survive).

All pre-1900 documents from the legal courts were lost, as were local government records for the same period.” Source The linked source also describes what remains.

I was fortunate enough to take my mother on a 10-day trip to Ireland in 2018 to Dublin, Galway, and the southern coast.

Having undergone this journey gives me even more inspiration to decorate for this holiday to celebrate my Celtic heritage.

Classy Decorating Tips for St. Patrick’s Day:

St. Patrick's Day is almost here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about festive decorations!

But don’t just settle for the same plastic shamrocks and inflatable leprechauns you’ve been using year after year.

This St. Patrick’s Day, why not add a bit of class to your celebrations?

Here are six easy steps for decorating in a more grown-up style:

1. Start with a Color Scheme

Pinterest

To achieve a more elegant look on St. Patrick’s Day, start by choosing two or three colors from the Irish flag – green, white, and orange – and use those as the basis for your decorations.

This will unify your decorations and create an eye-catching palette for your space.

2. Add Some Houseplants or Greenery

Nothing says sophistication like houseplants or greenery in shades of green, so this is the perfect way to bring a dash of class to your St. Patrick's Day decorations without going overboard on holiday kitsch.

Try placing potted plants throughout your home or arranging eucalyptus branches in vases for a simple yet beautiful display.

3. Hang String Lights

String lights are great for adding ambiance to any space - including yours on St. Patrick's Day!

Choose fairy lights with green accents or bright white garden lights to provide some discreet illumination that won't overwhelm the room but will help create an inviting atmosphere just right for celebrating the day in style!

4. Incorporate Natural Materials

Forget all those low-quality knick-knacks made of plastic and metals – if you want to make your St Patty’s Day classy, incorporate natural materials into your decorating scheme instead!

Use items such as wood slices, burlap fabric, pinecones, and driftwood to bring texture into the mix without compromising on elegance - they'll look great hung up around the house or used as table centerpieces during parties!

5. Go All Out with Floral Arrangements

Another great way to dress up your home this March 17th is by adding floral arrangements in easy-to-find shades of green!

If you're feeling adventurous you can try weaving stems together into intricate designs like shamrocks - another good option would be clusters of smaller bouquets placed around the room for an instant pop of color!

And don't forget those white lilies - they'll look stunning when dotted around other foliage arrangements too!

6. Accessorize with Personalized Items

Finally, personalize your décor with handmade items featuring iconic images from Irish culture such as shamrocks and four leaf clovers or quotes written in Gaelic font calligraphy!

You could also get creative by painting a large watercolor canvas with folkloric motifs like trinity knots (three connected circles) or lucky horseshoes depicting traditional luck-bringing lucky charms popularized during this month's festivities worldwide!

Pinterest Inspiration for St. Patrick’s Day Decor

Here are some of my favorite ideas that I’ve gathered from Pinterest:

  1. Press and frame clover.

I found a DIY tutorial Youtube here. Learn how to save and store a four leaf clover to make sure that it is preserved for a longer duration of time.

You can save clovers as well as all kinds of lovely leaves and foliage with these techniques.

May good luck be with you Wherever you go, and your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow.

3. Monochromatic Floral Display

There are several somewhat structured compositions, and colors are kept monochromatic. Photo via French Garden House.

4. Host an adult tea or dinner with a woodsy theme.

The forest theme is completed with simple bits of green secured with a ribbon.

In conclusion, St. Patrick's Day decor doesn't have to be tacky and over-the-top.

You can add a touch of green and Irish flair to your home without sacrificing style and sophistication.

Remember, less is often more when it comes to holiday decor.

By following the principles of simplicity, subtlety, and selective use of themed items, you can create a tasteful and festive atmosphere in your home.

As we celebrate the luck of the Irish, let's also embrace the idea that good design doesn't have to be loud and in-your-face.

So go ahead, add a subtle shamrock touch or a hint of green to your decor and join in on the St. Patrick's Day fun.

And as Steve Jobs once said, "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

So let's make sure our St. Patrick's Day decor works in harmony with our home and personal style. Happy decorating!
