Trying on a headpiece in New Orleans

Former Interior Designer turned published Papercrafts Industry Designer/blogger, exclusive photo editor, turned hybrid digital + paper scrapbooking magazine creative editor, turned furbaby-mom, turned Interior E-designer, and I’m sharing with your today 7 Reasons to Love My Award-Winning, Professional Interior Design Business. It’s been a full-circle back to my first love that I never gave up hope for. I had to return to make a difference in your life.

The beach. Cuddling with my dog Friday. My husband’s gigs. Travel. Pinterest. Pizza. So You Think  You Can Dance. Project Runway. HEARING SPORTS IN THE HOUSE.

Any clue which one does not belong?

Hi my loves, I’m the face behind the brand Julie Ann Rachelle Interior Design. According to my DNA, I am Western European, Scandinavian, Irish, Eastern European (Slovak), British, and bit Iberian. In May 2018, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to take my mother (paternal Irish descent) to Ireland for a week. A fascinating whirlwind trip to Dublin, Galway, and the southern coast near Cork.

As a lover of genealogy, our trip was truly a grounding experience. We even discovered a chain of stores bearing my mother’s maiden name, “Carroll.” My love of travel influences my design towards a refined bohemian sophistication I call “Collected Global Style.”  It’s just one of the many styles that I love.

If a single word describes getting your spouse on  board with decorating your way it would be: Yawn.

Regardless, whether  you and your spouse are fighting over paint color, or you’re attempting to get him on board with the whole decorating process, you’ve landed in the correct spot.

Congratulations!

I’m so happy that you found me.

Since you are currently here, something reveals to me you are here with an innovative soul, an inspirational outlook, and quite the brain.

However, perhaps you…

  • Need assistance because your schedule is just too hectic for you to design your home by yourself? It is a full-time job, I’ve heard from clients over and over.

  • You and your spouse are unable to agree on decorating decisions.

  • The two of you have clashing decorating styles, and you don’t know how to make it work.

  • Feel all alone. You wish others identify with what you're attempting to do. (Your besties are there for you, however don't "get it").

  • Regardless of what stage you are in your decor project you need your space to have more of a WOW!

  • You're READY take your home to that next level and hire a designer.

In any case, you don't have a clue how to make that a reality. You feel stuck.

Trust me my friend, I've been there.

What I Know to be True

Today, here and now, I want to share a couple of things I believe to be true…

  • I trust you have the deep-rooted, Lord, I have a fire in my belly desire. The kind that invigorates you to create a home is unique, brings you euphoria, and transforms you. Trust me. I'll tell you the best way to do it.

  • I trust you have a Huge Colossal Goal for your home you've kept covered up in the back of your psyche for a really long time. I'm here to enable you to relentlessly breathe life into this Huge Colossal  goal until we get it accomplished.

  • I trust you’re worthy of bliss, esteem, and admiration. Furthermore, I resolve to give you the means to realize those sentiments in each crook and corner of your home.

  • Truth be told, I likewise accept that doggy kisses and pizza can fix practically any terrible day. If those fail, turn on Project Runway or So You Think You Can Dance.

What I’m saying is this: you have something essential to plan, create, or source… and I'm here to enable you to do that like the mother lovin' rockstar you are.

About “Julie Ann Rachelle”

About "Julie Ann Rachelle" | Julie Ann Rachelle Interior Design

That’s not my “real” name.

That’s correct.

Julie Ann Rachelle is my brand name. It is also my first name + my given middle name + my confimation name.

I was born Julie Ann Bobinchek to Marilyn and James.

My confirmation at St. Peter’s Catholic Church

My confirmation at St. Peter’s Catholic Church

Picture the mid-1980’s, central Ohio, my confirmation taking place in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and I adopt the new name Rachelle, as is the custom for Roman Catholics to pick  a biblical character or a Saint name. I considered it as a second middle name, although I assume the church thinks of it as your new first name.

Now you’ll ask me “But are there no Saints named Rachelle?” and I’ll answer “You are correct!”

I wanted the name Raquel, however my mother said Rachelle was close to (St.) Rachel, who, according to the bible, was the favorite of Jacob’s two wives.

I don’t know how this was allowed, but apparently it was acceptable for me to take Rachelle, or perhaps my mother told them the pronunciation  is Rachel (RAY-chel), while I pronounce Rachelle as Ra-SHELL).

Nevertheless, ever since I was in design school I dreamed of naming my own interior design studio “Julie Ann Rachelle Interiors” or something to that effect.

When creating a name my business, I experimented with various business names such a La Nouvelle Interior Design, and Bonjour Interiors - I was hung up on using a French word influenced from my recent Madrid Gras trip.

Finally, I was in a client’s home, actually a very good friend’s home, and she said “Why don’t you just use your own name? I like Julie Interiors.”

I looked into Julie Interiors, and it was  taken.

As it turns out, LaNouvelle Interiors was also taken on Instagram, and advice given was  be wary of taking on a similar name so not to be a “cheater brand”.

So to be original,  Julie Ann Rachelle is 100% me and authentic as it gets!

Why not my married name? Julie Ann Shahin is my married name. Here, I’ll say it in big bold letters so you’ll know I’m not hiding it.

Julie Ann Shahin is my married name.

I  never considered it because I go straight to the memory of sitting in design class, staring down at my logo for Julie Ann Rachelle Interior Design, and thinking"one day.…”

From Interior Designer to Scrapbooking Designer to Interior EDesigner

In 2018 I was looking for a new creative outlet as I had been a design team member, magazine editor, and blogger in the scrapbook industry since getting married in 2004.

The popularity of instagram and snapchat had changed the scrapbook industry dramatically, and the hobby was no longer as popular as it had been when I first started. (Check out The History of Scrapbooking)

While I had my degree and a handful of years experience in Interior Design, a field I desperately loved, I knew that I needed a job that would allow me to work at home.

My husband works from home, we travel often, there were medical issues, and neither of us wanted our lifestyle to change.

I couldn't figure out how to make going back into Interior Design fit into these goals.

Then I started to hear about online interior design through social media.

At first, I  thought the only way that this was possible was to go work for a huge company where one is paid little (all the money goes to the company, not the designer), and the designs are often shoddy as a result, since it's not worth it for the designer to put much time into it.

However, I could no longer ignore the voice inside my head that told me I needed to share what I know about interior design to change lives, and so I decided to look into opening my own business.

In my research, I stumbled upon groups of women who were working at having their own interior online businesses, and I found out that with some hard work, I could make it happen.

So I decided to get into e-design and I have not looked  back since the Spring of 2019.

Awards and Publications

Sitting in 8th grade Home Ec, studying a unit on decorating, I decided I wanted to be an interior designer.

Perhaps it was the influence also of a character on an 80’s soap opera Santa Barbara.

High School Talent Show

Nevertheless, design has been the love of my life ever since.

(Except for a brief time in high school where I also considered becoming a professional dancer on Broadway.)

Publication in Interior Design

While studying at Michigan State University, one of my professors sent a project of mine in to be considered for publication in the prestigious magazine Interior Design.

COMPRESSED INTERIOR DESIGN MAGAZINE.jpg

It was a thrill and an honor to be published even before I graduated!

Interior Design is the definitive resource for interior designers, architects and other design pros, featuring groundbreaking projects, innovative new products.” Source:Interior Design

My project was a 3D scale model, 2D elevations and a floorplan for a residential bathroom that was universally designed.

That means that it was designed in mind for a child in a wheelchair, a senior citizen with a walker, a parent that was very tall, and a parent that was height-challenged.

The space had to work for each individual.

What stood out about my design is that I incorporated a toilet that I envisioned would work on hydrolics, much like a bus driver’s seat, so that it would elevate or “deflate” for you so your feet would touch the floor.

When my professor asked in the design stage how would the toilet work exactly, my reply was “That is for the engineer to figure out.”

Over 20 years later, and I’ve checked to find out that there are at least a handful of patents pending for hydrolic toilets.

I have no idea if there were any patents pending when this publication came out, pre-Google era.

State of Michigan Portfolio Competition

My senior portfolio went on to place 3rd in the state-wide portfolio competition, and everyone I interviewed with commented on how my portfolio was one of the best they’d ever seen.

2019 EDesign Tribe Contest

2019: Most recently, I won the first contest held by Edesign Tribe. We were asked to design a room based on a real space (as pictured on the left), provide 3D render(s), and a moodboard. You can view my winning contest entry below.
